Our Walking Journey So Far: An Honest Update from a Husky Owner

Image
Loki may look like a floofy (often grumpy-looking) angel, but in all honesty, he has always been a nightmare on a walk. We mentioned previously that we were working on loose lead walking with him, and so far it's going very well! Just maybe not as fast as I was hoping. It definitely seems slower than some guides may lead you to believe... Maybe this is because he is a husky ? Compared to when we first began, Loki has made a tonne of progress. He has gone from jolting in all directions, not listening at all, and making me feel like I was being walked by him, to: Waiting nicely and leaving the front door to start our walk at my side. Spending 70% of his walk trotting next to me. He now knows the "come back" command, and when I call this out and come to a stop he will come back to my side. However, we're still tackling a few problems. These being: Grass Yes... Grass, of all things. I can't even imagine how these smell to dogs, but Loki becomes very excited when we ...

My Husky Pulls On a Walk And How We Are Tackling It

Image
So far, we've faced some challenges when it comes to walking Loki.  Of course - he's a sled dog! Siberian Huskies are bred to pull. On top of this, we've had to work through some anxiety with Loki on walks which seems to make his pulling worse and unpredictable at times. But as you're probably aware, pulling on the lead can be dangerous especially with such a strong dog - not just for me but for him too.  We've tried all kinds of tools and tricks, but so far we're having the most success with ' Loose Lead Walking '.  Loose Lead Walking The principle of loose lead walking is to teach a dog to walk calmly on a leash without pulling, lunging, or otherwise behaving in an undesirable manner on a walk. Easier said than done right?  The technique is based on positive reinforcement, which means that the dog is rewarded for exhibiting the desired behavior. Rewarding the positive behaviour creates a positive association with not pulling, and this makes it more li...

Hugsy Daisy Review - Reviews with Loki

Image
A Nice Surprise Recently Loki won a giveaway! What can I say, he's got some incredible luck for a pup.  Part of the winnings included a Sailor Bow from a brand called Hugsy Daisy . For those who don't know, Hugsy Daisy creates handmade accessories for your fur friends. But there's no need for humans to be left out, they even make hair scrunchies so you can match up with your best pal! We reached out to Hugsy Daisy and they were very quick to respond. We chose a medium-sized Tartan Sailor Bow in the colour "Turq and Gold". With it being a giveaway and a handmade item I expected it to take a while to reach me. However, the bow arrived just a few days later. The Product Straight out of the box, I was very impressed. The colour is so vibrant and the material is so soft. It had a very upscale feel to it. It has a thin white strap that attached very easily to Loki's collar and took just moments. Loki's a boisterous boy - yet a few days in and it hasn't fall...

Let Me Introduce a Very Special Dog

Image
Hi friends! Story Time * T.W: Animal Cruelty * Meet Loki – A rescue Siberian Husky. Loki lives in the North East, UK, with his doting family. Loki at the time of writing this is just over a year old. He’s still full of energy, sass, and love, which couldn’t make us happier considering his initial start in life. Loki was part of a litter born into this world with one thing in mind – money. For the first 3 months of his life, he lived in a basement with his siblings. They ate, toileted, and slept in this basement. No enrichment, love, or natural light. The pups were very malnourished and their fur was stained yellow from sleeping in their waste. Loki was rescued by a fantastic team. He was given time to relax, have fun and just be a pup before coming to live with us. Despite everything Loki has been through, this sweet boy still has much love to give. He is gentle, goofy, and a massive cuddle bug. I have no idea how he is so trusting and loving after how he was treated by humans init...
