A Simple Grain Free Dog Biscuit Recipe (Peanut Butter and Banana Drizzle Bites)
As pet owners, we all want to give our furry friends the best possible care, from their food to their treats. Many store-bought dog treats contain grains and fillers that may not be suitable for some dogs, so why not try making your own homemade treats?
This simple recipe for homemade dog biscuits is grain-free and made with natural, dog-friendly ingredients.
And these ones are tried and tested... Loki absolutely loves them!
The Recipe
To make these delicious dog biscuits, you will need:
For the biscuits:
- 1 cup of gram flour (120g)
- 1/4 cup of 100% peanut butter with no nasties or artificial sweeteners added (60g)
- 1/4 cup of thinly chopped banana (50g)
- 2 tbsp of linseed (20g) *optional
- 1 tbsp of cinnamon (9g) *optional
- 1 - 4 tbsp of water *optional - to add as needed if the dough is too dry and crumbly.
For the drizzle:
- 1/4 cup peanut butter (60g)
- 1 tbsp of coconut oil (14g)
Side note 1: I worked in cups, but I have included rough conversions of how much the ingredients weigh in grams if you prefer to use that instead! Although I have included it, this is estimated and I have not worked in grams with this recipe as of yet.
Fruit Swaps: The banana can be swapped out for other fruits and vegetables that are dog friendly. Options include blueberries or even carrots!
Seed Swaps: Another good option to use in place of linseed is chia seed!
Cinnamon Swaps: There are SO many options you can use here. Great herbs and seasonings to try out are turmeric, rosemary, and basil.
Method
First, preheat your oven to 180C (355F) and line a baking tray with baking paper.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the Gram flour, peanut butter, chopped banana, linseed, and cinnamon. Mix well to form a dough. Add a tablespoon of water at a time as you go, depending on how dry your mix feels. You want to be able to work with the dough without it crumbling away.
Dust a surface with Gram flour and roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut out the biscuits into any shapes you like and place them on the lined baking tray. Bake the biscuits in the oven for around 15-18 minutes until they turn golden brown around the edges. Once done, take them out to cool.
While the biscuits are cooling, prepare the drizzle. Combine the peanut butter and coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 10 seconds at a time, stirring in between, until the mixture becomes runny. This usually takes around 30 seconds in total.
Once cool, lay the treats out on a surface you don't mind getting messy - I like to work on top of baking paper. Use a small spoon to drizzle thin lines over the top of each treat. The drizzle will harden quickly if popped into the fridge.
These biscuits should last for roughly 6 weeks if kept in the right conditions. Feed them wisely - the same with any treats, too many can be too much for your dog's tum!
About the Recipe
These homemade dog biscuits are grain-free due to the use of gram flour, which is made from chickpeas. Grain-free dog treats have become increasingly popular in recent years and for good reason.
Dogs, like humans, may have food sensitivities or allergies to certain grains, which can lead to digestive issues, skin problems, and other health concerns.
It's important to note that not all dogs need a grain-free diet, and some may do perfectly fine with grains in their food and treats. If you are unsure whether your dog needs a grain-free diet, it's best to consult with your veterinarian.
This homemade dog biscuit recipe is safe for dogs as it uses natural, dog-friendly ingredients. However, it's important to ensure that the peanut butter you use is safe for dogs. Look for an ingredients list that states it is 100% peanuts and shows that there are no sugars, salts, or sweeteners added. Artificial sweeteners like xylitol are highly toxic to dogs and should be avoided at all costs.
In Conclusion
This homemade dog biscuit recipe is a safe and healthy option for dogs of all ages and sizes. The use of natural, dog-friendly ingredients ensures that you're feeding your dog only the best.
The benefits of a grain-free diet for dogs have been shown in several studies, and this recipe is an excellent option for those looking to switch to or maintain a grain-free diet.
